Understanding the visual by Tony Schirato and Jen Webb – book for Constellation

My understanding of chapter intro/ chapter one

Visual culture ‘is not just a part of your everyday life, it is your everyday life’ Bates Lowry (1967:13) sight is, of course, a natural physiological process, but the perception and reception of visual elements is not; it depends instead on a nuber of factors.. ‘ We navigate our way through the world by seeing. We communicate with others by seeing. Our culture, our histories, context, our tastes and interest/habits effect what we actually see.We speak using sight metaphors. Humans have always made marks and studied others marks. Western society focuses on vision as the most important sense, whereas Middle Eastern society would focuses on hearing. ‘We see through he frameworks and filters produced by our culture and by our personal histories’ (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! RESEARCH MORE ON THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)Vision is a sign of truth and knowledge. (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! look into Powerpoint of Martin talking about this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) ‘Visual culture can therefore be defined not as things, but as a way of thinking, an intellectual discipline for making sense of the world’. ‘…visual culture and the processes of seeing as social practices that take place in particular contexts, which themselves have historical and cultural settings – including the specific moments in which individuals view them, and what each individual brings to their viewing of the object.’ ‘when reading the visual, we draw on our general and specific knowkedges, our tastes and our habits and our personal contexts…’ *selfish point of critics* ‘each individual’s habitus disposes them to frame the material that is in front of their eyes in paricular ways, to value it diffferently and to negociate it according to their own interests.’ (Child growing up in Cape town example) ‘When studying visual culture, then, it is important that researchers undertsand their own habitus so that they can be reflective about what they see, and about why they might read and evaluate it in a particular way.’

UNDERSTANDING THE VISUAL BY TONY SCHIRATO AND JEN WEBB

‘human beings have always looked at and seen the world around them, made sense of themselves and others through their understanding of what they see’

‘what we see is infact what we make or are made to see: we see through frameworks and filters produced by our culture and by our personal histories.’

‘… depends on a number of factors.. our culture, our history, the context in which we are looking , what we already know about the world, what our own tastes, interests and habits predispose us to see’

‘tacit’ and ‘literate’ seeing – dr watson/sherlock holmes.

‘looking and seeing are as different as babbling and speaking’ bates lowry (1967:13)
